Welcome to the sun-drenched shores of Pismo State Beach, located along California’s Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County. Stretching from the Pismo Pier south through Oceano, this iconic coastal park blends golden sands, majestic dunes and rich wildlife—ideal for an unforgettable seaside getaway.

What Makes Pismo State Beach Unique

This State Beach is beloved for its seamless combination of beachside camping and dune adventures. It is also renowned for its majestic natural displays—from migrating monarch butterflies to stellar off-roading terrain. Whether you’re clamming on the sandbars, strolling along Monarch Butterfly Grove, or chasing dunes in an ATV, Pismo offers both calm coastal charm and exhilarating outdoor fun.

Top Activities & Amenities

Beach Access & Swimming

Access the broad, flat shoreline from multiple points including Pier Avenue and Dolliver Street. Lifeguards patrol during the summer, and swimming is popular—but cold water and rip currents mean caution is key.

Camping & RV Facilities

The North Beach Campground features 103 sites (no hookups) equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, restrooms, paid hot showers and a dump station. Further south at Oceano Campground you’ll find 39 tent and 40 RV full-hookup sites. Both campgrounds require reservations via ReserveCalifornia.

Off-Road Vehicles & Dune Recreation

Eight miles of towering dunes await at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area—California’s only beach where OHVs are legal. With ATV, UTV and dune buggy rentals available locally, it’s a thrilling playground. Note: Arroyo Grande Creek crossing may close access when water is high.

Fishing & Surfing

Surf fishing from shore and dunes attracts surfperch, striped bass, and halibut. No license is needed on the pier, but a license is required elsewhere. Surfers in wetsuits ride year-round swells, with lessons and surf shops nearby.

Wildlife Viewing & Nature Center

Monarch Butterfly Grove hosts thousands of overwintering monarchs from November to February. The Oceano Campground Nature Center features interactive displays, guided nature walks, interpretive programs and a small gift shop.

Picnic Areas & Beach Amenities

Picnic tables dot the dunes near restrooms and showers. Volleyball courts near the pier, children’s playgrounds, food concessions and gift shops are available at both campgrounds and nearby villages.

Hiking, Biking & Horseback Trails

Pismo Preserve offers over 10 miles of trails across coastal bluffs and ranch lands—perfect for hiking, biking or horseback riding. You can also ride along the beach in the vehicle zone, but private off-road trails are prohibited.

Restrooms, Showers & Dump Station

Vault restrooms and showers are located in both campgrounds, with a dump station at North Beach Campground. Drinking water is available at restrooms and campgrounds—pack out any additional waste.

Visitor Tips

  • Camping Reservations: Use ReserveCalifornia; sites book months ahead, especially summer and monarch season.
  • Vehicle Access: Dune riding allowed from 7 AM until one hour after sunset. Bring flags, adhere to the 15 mph speed limit, and stay out of sensitive nesting zones.
  • Parking Fees: Campground fees vary by season; day-use parking by pier may require meters or permits.
  • Pets: Dogs must be leashed; allowed in campgrounds and on most beaches, but prohibited in Monarch Grove during overwintering season.
  • Off-Road Hazards: Check tide tables and creek depth before attempting Arroyo Grande crossing—creek may be impassable during high tide or storms.
  • Wildlife Protection: Observe monarchs at least five feet away and don’t disturb butterfly clusters or nesting birds.
  • Beach Safety: Seasonal rip currents can be strong; swim near lifeguard stations when open.
  • Pismo Preserve: No access off-trail; bring water and sun protection for bluff-side hikes.

Local Insight & Seasonal Tip

Visit in late fall through early spring to witness the extraordinary monarch butterfly migration at Pismo Grove. Avoid the crowds by visiting midweek for a peaceful experience. For dune seekers, schedule an early morning ATV ride at low tide to catch first light over sculpted dunes and sparkling ocean. Then enjoy breakfast at a nearby café before heading to Pismo Preserve for hilltop views of the coastline. And if you’re here in spring, don’t miss clam digging at low tide—just bring your license, measure your catch, and savor fresh seafood straight from the beach.
